good morning, everyone. it is 8:00 a.m. on sad morning. i'm katie marzullo. we start you off with a first quick look at the weather. here's meteorologist lisa argen. >> katie, the cold front pushed on with a tenth of an inch and half inch in concord and the north bay. here's a little cell headed towards half moon bay but the bulk of the activity has moved out of the bay area and pink right there was the snow that we saw falling on the santa cruz mountains just in the last couple of hours. and down towards monterey, still some showers. the bulk of the day will be dry with increasing sunshine and cool northwesterly winds. temperatures just in the upper 40s today all over the bay. katie? >> lisa, thank you.

right now, there is some snow in the santa cruz mountains. abc 7 news reporter is live in boulder creek. what do you see out there? >> reporter: katie, we have been looking all over this morning for snow. and we finally found it. there's a light dusting of fresh snow here on empire grade road in the santa cruz mountains. perfect for would be christmas trees and that's where we are at the christmas tree farm at the top of the mountain. it started snowing about 25 minutes ago for the first time today. here on empire grade road. not far from boulder creek. light flurries up here but a cool, rare and beautiful sight for sure. nonetheless. sky 7 hd made a pass over the lick observatory in the last 30 minutes on mt. hamilton and you can check that out. it's covered in a light blanket of snow this morning. we talked to the christmas tree farm owner.

he couldn't be more thrilled about this light dusting of snow. he said all the more reason to come up here to his christmas tree farm on empire grade road. the sun just came out. the snow just stopped falling so chances are snow won't be here more than a couple of hours but certainly rare and beautiful sight and if you're driving up here, just like that car, be very careful because it is extremely slippery and icy up here this morning, as well. live in the santa cruz mountains, abc 7 news. >> yeah. thank you for bringing us that for those of us that can want get to it ourselves. north bay now, the higher elevations of napa county hit with snow last night. the plows were on stand by. >> by 8:30, the rain washed away most of the snow at elevation 4,300 but for part of the afternoon, the flakes definitely falling, enough that k cal trans

put up signs. four miles down highway 29, the evening was peppered with downpours. it was an awful trip to get just about anywhere, some locals say the wet blast is unusual. >> i can pretty much get through the entire winter without turning on the heat and went home today and turned the heat on. we are miserable. >> reporter: visitors of chicago celebrating the 15th anniversary got a taste of the city they just left. >> expecting sunny. it was supposed to be our anniversary and here we are like in weather just like chicago. >> reporter: to get out of the 39-degree cold, some folks jumped in 104-degree water at the call calastoga hot spring. >> it is good for you. >> reporter: walking back into the cold is hard part. abc 7 news. >> no kidding. check out this cal trans image. 101 north is shut down due to

snow and traffic related collisions and this picture is just west of there on highway 20. in sierra, chains required at 3,200 for drivers. there's a winter storm warning until 10:00 this morning in the lake tahoe region. elevations above 7,000 feet there you can expect 1 to 2 feet of snow. the freezing temperatures damaged some fruit trees in the east bay. at four winds growers in fremont, avocado and pink lemon trees had the most damage and they were insulated but still the cold seeped in. heartier plants were not affected. this morning, much of the u.s. is covered in ice and snow, especially the south and midwest as a wintry blast heads east. four people have been killed on u.s. roads since the storm hit thursday. a windchill advisory for northeast kansas and missouri boot heel and forecasters say wipd chill read egs between zero and minus five could occur

today. virginia officials warn residents of tomorrow. more than 1,100 flights canceled nationwide because of the weather. in the bay area, sfo canceled about 13 arriving and 17 departing flights. also, several flights at san jose were canceled. we have been receiving photos from you our viewers of the cold snap. one picture is snow. you can e-mail your wintry weather pictures. please do. developing news where police investigate a shooting that left a woman dead just before midnight last night a parking lot near the foley cultural center. a concert was going on at the time and a gun fight broke out. the woman who was killed is not identified but police say she was 34 years old. one other woman sustained minor injuries. there are no suspects in custody at this time. developing news out of san

jose, police investigating a fatal accident happening just after midnight near moore park avenue where a car slammed into a tree. police say the car was speeding and it was raining. one man was killed. no word yet whether alcohol was a factor. the expressway was closed while crews investigated but it's since reopened. developing news in the castro valley where officials are assessing the damage to homes by a water main break. the break of the 12-inch main just before 7:00 last night near the corner of seven hills drive and santa maria avenue. crews shut down the flow of water by 10:00 and the break caused flooding to several homes. >> i've seen water gushing from the neighbors behind me down the street. of course, coming from under my house. yeah. just a mess. >> the break also caused this, take a look. a 10 by 15-foot sinkhole. a fire truck got trapped in that but since been able to be towed

out and no word yet on what caused the water main to break. more developing news this morning, the palo alto veteran held captive in north korea is on his way home right now. newman was held for more than a month and last night he was deported from north korea. here's the latest. >> reporter: merrill newman is on his way home from north korea after a month. >> i appreciate the tolerance of the dpprk government for me to be on my way. >> reporter: the 85-year-old palo alto man completed a 10-day tour of the north and agents of the communist regime pulled him off his return flight. the pyongyang government claimed he killed north koreans in the korean war 1950 to 1953. north korean state-controlled television showed him reading from an apparent confession. >> collected information of the kpa and attacked communication system and killed three innocent

operators, delayed the munition supply using explosives. >> reporter: his son says he's absolutely dlooigted about the announcement. >> as you can imagine, this is a very difficult ordeal for us as a family and particularly for him. >> reporter: his detention as tensions are high in the korean peninsula although the north recently toned down the hostile rhetoric of earlier in the year threatening to launch nuclear warheads. abc 7 news. north korea's official news agency said newman was released because he apologized for the alleged war crimes and because of his age and medical condition. vice president biden who's in south korea praised the release last night and asked him if he wanted to fly home in style. >> i offered him a ride home on air force two but there's a direct flight to san francisco, his home. so i don't blame him. i would be on that flight, too. >> newman is on a flight to sfo right now as we said and he is expected to arrive later this morning. that will be one happy home

all of that snow. that just falling in the last several hours. that's 22 degrees on mt. hamilton right now. gorgeous wintry sight for us this morning. the search for a missing bay area pilot and his family is scaled back in idaho. silicon valley executive dale smith and four members of his family disappeared last weekend. bad weather in the area yesterday forced the local sheriff's department to call off the air search for the family. officials say they can't put the rescue teams in harm's way. a sonoma county deputy who shot and killed a teenager with a toy aka-47 will return to duty next week, returning to work in an administrative capacity. he was on leave since the shooting of andy lopez. meanwhile, efforts are growing for the creation of a park in memory of the boy. the morning continues in

south africa for nelson mandela as details of the funeral are released. these are live pictures right now as people gathering at his home in johannesburg to remember him. tomorrow is a day of prayer in snik and mandela will be buried a week from sunday. bay area leaders are remembering the late nelson mandela. one is reverend williams of the glide foundation seen in this picture with mandela in 1990. williams was arrested at an anti-apartheid rally at cal in may of 1985. mandela said that movement helped quicken the end of south africa's white minority rule. >> and he is in jail, and yet, he comes out of jail and he stands tall and says, i am not going to destroy. i came here to liberate. >> abc 7 news reporter spoke to two former cal students that helped windy versement against

apartheid in south africa. >> reporter: these papers were typed by a student with a plan to help end apartheid in south africa. the year was 1985 and students were from uc berkeley. california assembly woman skinner was the leader of the student diversement committee. >> student leaders like myself, faith-based leaders that did the initiative and city of berkeley was the first city in the u.s. to divest 1979 and all of the activism. >> reporter: there were daily rallies, students quickly began to camp out until berkeley police staged a raid and arrested dozens of protesters. one of the leaders of those demonstrations was student body president pedro noreigo speaking to us from new york. >> our protest elevated the issue and generating broad support for the issue. >> all that is left of the future is now. >> reporter: by now the movement had gained a lot of media

attention and the interest of professors, celebrities and lawmakers. >> ask the question, what the hell is the university of california doing making profits from a slave system in 1986? >> reporter: then speaker of the california assembly brown was invited to address the crowd and help convince the uc regents to vote to withdraw the university's investments in businesses trading with south africa. a little over a year after the protests began, the regents voted on a three-year plan to divest their holdings in south africa. >> actually, the first vote was the regent vote that caused california to become the identifiable capital of the movement to kill apartheid. >> reporter: and a memorial to remember the life and legacy of nelson mandela will take place in the rotunda of city hall in san francisco on wednesday at 8:00 in the morning.

in the newsroom, abc 7 news. the famous bat kid is returning to san francisco today for a fund-raiser. 5-year-old miles scott had lue came yeah but he is in remission and who can forget this scene last month as thousands of people came out to support miles as he fought off the riddler and penguin. it was his wish to be a superhero. this morning he will reunite with the san francisco police chief for the brave the bay fund-raiser for the make-a-wish foundation. it's a holiday triathlon of sorts. and giants all-star said he was inspired by the bat kid wish and pledging to match $50,000 in patricia wilson raises that amount today when she takes her plunge into the bay. abc 7 news anchor ama dates is hosting the event and starts in about 15 minutes. so, hopefully everyone's suited

up. hopefully that fund-raiser goes off without a hitch. do they have to do like polar style? >> i think so, yeah. i think so. >> whew. more than i can handle no matter what. >> warmer bay water than the air temperature. >> unbelievable. >> still underneath the cold snap with the coldest temperatures seen this season still to come. not tomorrow morning, looks like monday morning. live doppler 7 hd and still moisture out there, as well. we did pick up some snow around boulder creek, just in the past hour. now, in the moisture moved on through, the temperatures were up so no snow in the north bay in the overnight hours and higher elevations but take a look. still a little moisture left over right around half moon bay. pushing south and east and don't be surprised to see coastal showers, maybe high elevation snowflakes and when the front went through last night, picked up anywhere from almost a half inch in napa, concord, a half

inch san rafael, over a quarter of an inch in oakland and over a third in san francisco. with just over a tenth in san jose. still pretty good rain make we are the wind and from the camera, plenty of sunshine that wind will continue to kick up and the numbers have been dropping this morning with low 40s san francisco, redwood city to 39d degrees and half moon bay, 45. the northwesterly winds blowing today keeping it well below average with all the sunshine. only 34 santa rosa. 38 in napa. low 40s with concord and liver more. most of the moisture out of the north bay and not picking up more snow there and leftover moisture in the south bay and wind for everyone this afternoon. right now gusting over 15 miles per hour to 24 miles per hour. around alit ma pass and along the coast and it's a breezy day today and temperatures are still

relatively warm this morning compared to where they will be tonight and sunday night when a freeze warning goes up, so we still are going to look for some awfully cold temperatures in the mornings the next few mornings. san jose, nice and sunny for you. so breezy and chilly with the sunshine. temperatures today just in the 40s. maybe 50 if you're lucky. here's a look at the next several days. forecasting overnight lows just a little bit below freezinging in santa rosa. look at monday and tuesday. monday morning the coldest morning in the low 20s and then look at temperatures slowly recovering not until the middle of the next week. next couple of hours with coastal showers and sunshine dominating the skies today with breezy winds and the winter storm warning for an hour and a half in the sierra nevada. very gusty winds, not a great day to get there. upper 40s and breezy and the

when some merchandise began going missing at a dollar general store in south carolina employees were starting an investigation, but they were in for a surprise discovering the culprit. that's him. turns out the dog behind the disappearance of, get this, dog treats from store shelves. footage shows him going into the store twice over the course of several minutes and while inside he steals dog treats and then buries them nearby. not to worry. doesn't look like him or the

of the pearl harbor bombing will gather for the lighting of the beacon ceremony. it was turned off so it wasn't targeted. every since 1964 on december 7th rvelg , it's been lit to honor victims. today's ceremony is moved due to weather and instead it will be held at the cal state east bay campus in concord. could the latest diet craze be as simple as taking a walk? most people are tracking the steps to lose weight and many are using technology developed right here in the bay area to do it. here's health and science reporter carolyn johnson. >> reporter: chris walks five miles a day just getting around the game store in downtown oakland. he knows exactly how many steps he takes thanks to a tiny tracker in his pocket called fit bit. >> changed my life basically it

>> reporter: carolyn johnson, abc 7 news. >> both the fit bit flex and jawbone up cost just under $130. crews in castro valley this morning investigating what caused a water main break that flooded several houses just before 7:00 last night in seven hills drive and santa maria avenue. the rupture of the 12-inch main caused a sinkhole to form and a fire truck was stuck in it. it's since been towed out. crews shut down the flow of water by 10:00. happening now, about 1,000 volunteers from 16 companies in the south bay are building more than 2,000 bikes for needy children. the event known as the big bike build is organized by the group turning wheels for kids. the volunteers have just five hours to put all the bikes together and then they'll go to local charities and be distributed to children as gifts. the big bike build got under way at this 8:00 this morning and until 1:00 and held at the san jose convention center.

most of us had to adapt to the internet but it's all young people have ever known so schools are racing to make children's education as modern and as connected as the rest of their lives and this week that effort got a good boost of two of the most influential names in tech. here's jonathan bloom. >> reporter: when mike teaches math, technology is everywhere. it's how he collects the homework. >> taylor, megan and ashley. >> reporter: and goes over the trouble spots. >> 12 to the second power is 144. >> reporter: take a rubber stylus and an ipad and add powerpoints for a classroom of kids paying attention. >> totally engaged to the kids an they love it. and you can just see their eyes open when they see technology on the big screen. >> reporter: it's new face of education for a new generation of learners. >> these kids are digital natives and this is their world.

>> reporter: never mind the ipads and the fancy projection screens. one of the most important ingredients is one you can't see. this middle school has a blazingly fast internet connection and a luxury half the schools in san mateo county doesn't have. >> they have 500 or in the case of this school over 800 kids trying to use that bandwidth. >> reporter: evan marwel is the head of a nonprofit out to change that with $9 million from microsoft founder bill gates and facebook founder mark zuckerberg. >> i think what they have realized is that we're at a tipping point right now in terms of technology to make a difference. >> reporter: he envisions a world where classrooms stream video at once with the passing of nelson mandela as teachable moments but to get there the super highway has to find out which schools need the upgrade, connect them with federal grant money and give them help

south and east. so the higher elevations a little bit of moisture left over and if you go up about 1,500 feet, 2,000 feet, snow. we have sunshine back home from the emeriville camera and chilly and staying that way for a few days. over a quarter of an inch in oakland and nearly a half inch in napa. we got that in san rafael and concord. over a third in san francisco. and san jose picked up the camera, nice and sunny with low 40s and just 39 on the peninsula. good morning, san jose. another couple of days of these 40s until we get back to normal. we need the rain. doesn't look too promising in the seven-day outlook, though. 34 in santa rosa and the northwest winds blowing now. fairfield 38.

40 in liver more and concord. the winds 25 to 30 miles per hour gusts. and off the coast, as well. continuing to pick up throughout the day. a breezy afternoon and this morning pretty mild in the wake of the cold front but, boy, tomorrow we'll be back into the 20s again. so we've got a freeze warning in effect for sunday morning and monday morning. san jose partly cloudy right now. breezy and chilly. sunny, cool and breezy this afternoon and we'll see an extensive period of temperatures in the 20s overnight. not tonight but throughout monday night. tonight chilly, too, dropping to about 30 in santa rosa. into monday, the coldest morning not much better on tuesday. it's going to take until the middle of next week until we see overnight lows just at freezing. so still you want to keep the plants inside and the pets and you're going to have to keep the heat on, as well. here's a look next hour through the next hour.
